I'm Climbing the Highest Dunes in Morocco - Erg Chigaga Dunes - and Conquering My Mental Limitations!
Exciting News: My Sahara Desert Trek is Back On with New Dates - November 13th to 18th, 2024! 🐫🏜️✨
My Story
Hi, I'm Nicola, but you can call me Nicki. I'm a busy mother of three, working for Paystream and volunteering as a Food Waste Hero for Olio.
Eighteen months ago, I decided to take on the 'Sahara Desert Trek' challenge to conquer Morocco's Chigaga Dunes. This challenge provided a much-needed distraction and a sense of purpose. Fundraising for CAFT gave me a reason to push through my struggles with Post Natal Depression (PND) that I experienced after the birth of my son, Tovey.
In 2013, I gave birth to my son Calvin, who was born sleeping due to a congenital condition. To honor him and regain a sense of purpose, I began volunteering and fundraising to support the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust (CAFT). Based at the beautiful Booth Bank Farm, a 17th-century farmhouse in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, CAFT provides free programs for terminally ill, disabled, and disadvantaged children from all over the NorthWest.
CAFT helps children of all abilities aged 17 and under, who through no fault of their own miss out on the normalities of childhood. The children’s needs range from severe physical and learning disabilities, sensory impairments, and terminal illnesses, to children who act as carers for a family member, have faced bereavement, or have been victims of abuse. For these children, a visit to CAFT provides a much-needed opportunity to have fun and simply enjoy being children.
Each child is treated as an individual with their strengths, likes, and dislikes. Disability is never seen as a barrier to participation, and CAFT welcomes children from all social and ethnic groups. Our brilliant Activity Play Specialists provide fun, safe, and engaging activities that suit the interests and needs of every visiting child.
Today, I’m in a much better place mentally and personally. My struggles with PND are behind me, and I believe this cause and fundraising for this challenge played a significant role in helping me through it. Joining this challenge has been transformative, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to support such an amazing charity.
Thank you for reading and supporting me on this journey.
